Predecessor Energy! What is it?
The Energy of former occupants. Things that have gone on in a building seem to carry an IMPRINT that often can't be defined. It is a FEELING more then anything else. Some of those feelings aren't very good ones. Many of my clients see and hear things as well.
Have you ever heard of predecessor energy? Have you ever searched for a new place to live but noticed that some spaces just don’t feel good, even though they look appealing? You were probably intuitively feeling the predecessor energy of the space. Predecessor Energy – What is it? Have you ever walked into a room just after an argument had taken place and felt that the room was “charged” in some way? It actually was, and what you were feeling was the negative energy created by an event.
Predecessor energy is the unseen energy of either the land itself or the former occupants of the space. Although unseen, predecessor energy is impactful because it has a life force that can be felt. Chances are if you're a Real Estate Agent, a Home Stager, a Home Inspector or anyone who works closely with homes, you've felt it at one time or another. A certain ENERGY seems to come from some homes and businesses that makes us uncomfortable.....either from the moment we step into the home or in a certain area, if so consider Predecessor Energy.
Before purchasing a home, or anything that has been used in the past, I always consider the effect predecessor energy can have. If I were considering purchasing two homes of equal value and desirability in the same neighborhood, I would want to know why the buyer is selling the home. If one home is being sold because of a divorce, its predecessor energy may be dense, filled with grief and sadness. If the other home is being sold because the owners are doing well financially and want to buy a bigger home, the predecessor energy may be lighter, filled with optimism and prosperity. Naturally, I would choose the latter due to the favorable energy.
Clearing Predecessor Energy
If you are already in a home and feel that unhealthy predecessor energy is present but do not want to move, “clear the energy” with a camphor burning or fire burning. Any type of spiritual ritual or blessing can help to “reset and refresh” the energy, making a difference to the energetic feel and impact of the unseen environment.
However, predecessor energy can be extremely positive and help you in many ways. For example, if you are trying to have children and the previous dwellers had to move because they needed more space for their expanding family, that is good energy for you to move into. In a business scenario, if the previous tenant’s business did so well they had to move to a larger office, that is definitely a plus. Just being aware of the history of a space can assist you in making choices that will support you in your environment!
The good news is that if you have occupied your current space for over 7 years, energy from previous occupants is likely gone. Just the same, you may want to bless your home to give it the energy of renewal and everyone occupying the space a fresh start.
Client Story
How Do I Make Our New Home Our Own? (Predecessor Energy)
We received a call from a newly single mom, C., who had recently moved into a new home that she had purchased for herself and her son. She loved the home but felt that, somehow, it was still not hers. She said that while she had moved in 5 months before, her efforts to unpack and personalize the home were stalled. This was totally contrary to her normal, get it done, approach. Something was holding her back. She didn't fell comfortable in her own bedroom - she wasn't sleeping well.
We arrived at a very pleasant home in an up and coming older neighborhood. The house was a cozy home that had been built in the late 1940s. We learned that she had purchased to home from the sons of the second owner. They had purchased it in 1951 and had raised their family there and lived there their entire life. C. said that the purchase had taken an unusually long time. She felt that the sons were very reluctant to sell - to let go of their home.
We made a walk through of the home and felt nothing particularly negative, certainly no entities or ghosts. We located a very interesting and energetic ley line running through the center of the house, generally positive energy. Interesting in that the consequence of this energy was that the two ceiling lights on this line were always going through light bulbs.
What this house needed was a clearing to remove predecessor energy and a house blessing. Predecessor energies are patterns of energy left behind by previous occupants and/or events. These can be negative energies from death, trauma, divorce, bankruptcy, abuse or positive energies from happy, active and fulfilled lives. If the vibes are great you may not be calling us. However, if it don't feel right...
C. needed to clear the house of its past, as pleasant as it may have been it was time for a new beginning. We began by opening the house to possibilities, using sound, smoke and fire we dispelled the old and made way for the new. There were changes in C.'s bedroom and her son's that enabled them to own their space and begin to move on. There were ceremonies we conducted to imbue the house with their intentions and hopes.
C. says that she and her son now feel like it's home. They've gotten unpacked and C. is sleeping well for the first time.
